Local govt election disrupted in Offa local govt, kwara state

The Local government elections held today was disrupted in Offa local government of kwara state. Recall that The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Offa Local Government Council Area of Kwara State chapter had last week accused the state Governor Bukola Saraki and the state’s Independent Electoral Commission of plans to rig the October 30, 2010 local government council elections.

According to the chairmanship candidate of the ACN in Offa Local Government Council, Prince Saheed Popoola, the state government and the Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC) had perfected plans to manipulate the election results in favour of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidates.

Popoola, who led hundreds of the ACN supporters to the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, Osogbo, the state capital, on Tuesday last week for a press conference on the elections, alleged that the KWASIEC has already written certificates of returns to the chairmanship and councillorship candidates of the PDP in Offa Local Government Council Area.

The Offa ACN further alleged that Saraki had instructed the KWASIEC to disqualify its chairmanship candidate at all costs, even after he had scaled through screening of the commission, adding that the governor was hell-bent in capturing the council area for the PDP.

The opposition party said the insistence of the state government and the PDP to conduct the election in October this year despite the fact that the present voters’ register was faulty with a lot of errors, was to rig themselves into power before the commencement of the new voters’ registration exercise.

The party said though it was opposed to the conduct of the council elections this year with the old voters’ register, but it would participate actively should the state government insisted on conducting the elections.
