The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disassociated itself from the controversial text messages alleged to have been sent to several candidates gunning for the State governor's seat by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Kassim Gaidam, demanding for various sums of money.
The Commission's Spokesperson Mrs Sule Imodu who made the rebuttal in a Press statement made available to Elombah.com yesterday stated that the text message neither emanated from the REC nor any Staff of the Commission, but from dubious persons with the intent to “defraud unsuspecting members of the public, especially politicians.”
Imodu who gave the numbers used in the scam as 08154316696 and 08026862268, also read the contents as; “Andrew, pls I am at Sokoto state for REC’s workshop, and I am coming back to Edo tomorrow. Some of my staffs are at Obudu cattle ranch for retreat, pls help me and send N300,000 to them. See me by Thursday at Benin. All the best, Account no. Dr. Agha Vincent O. 1203010290098. First Bank. Kassim Gaidam REC.”
She cautioned members of the public to discountenance such dubious text messages, adding that members of the public, “especially desperate candidates, political parties/politicians are particularly reminded that the Resident Electoral Commissioner’s GSM number has not changed from the ones earlier given to them".
