Edo State Governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and top Party Chieftains of the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), yesterday escaped death by the whisker when unknown gunmen suspected to be sponsored thugs of rival Politicians opened
fire on the convoy of the governor in Usen community, Ovia South West Local Government Area of the the State.
It was gathered that the Governor and his team who were returning from a campaign rally in a nearby village ran into a roadblock mounted by the thugs. However, as security operatives attached to the governors alighted from their vehicles with the aim of removing the barricades, the thugs appeared from a nearby bush and shot sporadically at the convoy, while the Security men immediately returned fire and chased away the assailants.
Confirming the incident, the State Commissioner for information, Mr. Luis Odion through a press release said the thugs were agents of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) sent to eliminate the governor in their desperate bid to reclaim the State. The statement further revealed that several persons sustained gunshort wounds while vehicles were riddled with bullets.
"Governor Adams Ashiomhole today after paying homage to the Onogie of Usen, His Royal Highness Oluogbe II, at his palace ran into a barricade in a distance not too far from the Palace.
"Naturally, the security details attached to the governor came down to remove the bar. As they were clearing it, tens of heavily armed thugs emerged from nowhere and opened fire on the governor for several seconds.
"Dutifully, the brave security details attached to the governor supported by an additional contingent of regular policemen deployed to maintain law and order, rose to the occasion. They were able to shield the governor, key government functionaries and others, including top leaders of Edo Action Congress of Nigeria, to safety without sustaining any human casualty.
"But several official vehicles including Toyota Land cruisers, Hilux Pick-ups Vans and Toyota Corolla Saloon cars, were either damaged or diddled with bullets", the statement read.
The statement however added thus;, "apparently annoyed they missed their target, the thugs later descended on the near-by police post and vandalised it".
The government urged the people to remain calm and law-abiding adding that security operatives in the state are doing their best to ensure that the lives and properties of inhabitants are adequately protected.
