The Government of Plateau State, North-central Nigeria has distanced itself from the call by certain interest groups for the creation of a new State out of the present day Plateau State. The Government speaking through its Commissioner for information, Pastor Yiljap Abraham in a news briefing thursday, noted that though it is not
against genuine agitation for state creation in line with constitutional specification, it frowns at a situation where people embark on such campaign out of acrimony and with sinister intent to score cheap points because their demands were not met.
The statement reads, " The Plateau State Government is not opposed to genuine demand for state creation that meet constitutional requirements and follow due consultation with the stakeholders, government however cautions against the agitation for a new state out of the present Plateau that is tainted and ill-motivated as an extension of earlier calls by vested interest outside the State for the dismemberment of the state."
Abraham also added that the government was seriously disturbed that some requests are aimed at discrediting the giant stride of the Redemption Agenda and distabilizing the government.
"Let it be known that the government of Plateau state is working harder by the day to raise the tempo and scope of the development which touches directly on the lives of the people of the state.
"Government will therefore resist attempt to weaken the unity of the state and further expose the state to insecurity and a return to a no-development platform of the past. Plateau State faces numerous security challenges and won't wish to be distracted", he concluded.
