Good example: Aregbesola Inaugurates State Security Squad

The report below in Osun Defender of 8 August 2012, is a good example of what every Governor in every State in Nigeria could be doing for better security of life and property in their States. Beyond political and other debates, Governor Rauf Aregbesola deserves to be commended for this particular initiative. All elements of the

initiative are important but the most important, most productive, least expensive element must be to encourage, organize and assist people in every village or town in every local government area to play specific recognized important roles in networking for their own and local community security.

Gathering and swiftly sharing useful information with well publicized cell phone numbers of relevant neighbourhood civil defence, police and army groups about criminals and terrorists is most useful to promptly abort criminal operations and bring them to justice before they actually strike.

With a view to improving on the continuous security and peaceful atmosphere in the State of Osun, the governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has inaugurated a quick response security apparatus called Swift Action Squad (SAS).

The squad which comprises of the Army, the police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps and the Sheriff Guard of the Osun Youths Empowerment Scheme (OYES), the governor said, was targeted at putting a security cordon on the state and putting a ‘No Trespass’ notice to bandits and other criminally-intentioned individuals.

Inaugurating the squad on Monday, the governor also lunched five Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), 25 Pick-up Patrol Vans, helmets and bullet-proof wears for the use of the officials of the squad.

Quoting Chapter II, Section 14, paragraph 2b of the 1999 Constitution as amended, the governor said that “the security and welfare of the people shall be the primary purpose of government”, saying that a government exists to give protection of lives and properties, impose peace and security and maintain law and order.

Governor Aregbesola who noted that “it is under this environment that people can enjoy their liberty, engage in fruitful and legitimate economic activities and realise the full potentials of their personality”, stated that it was the commitment of his administration to fulfill this obligation.

He said: “We have been working hard to provide the good life for our people by tarring roads, building schools, promoting agriculture, creating jobs, providing safe water, enhancing transportation, caring for the aged and so on and we have been engaged in providing massive infrastructure for economic development of the state and inviting investors to come and do business with us. These, however, are hinged on an environment of peace and tranquility.

“We want every business premise in the state to be safe and for all business transactions to be done with peace of mind. We want especially all financial institutions to be safe and well protected. We are putting an end to daring broad daylight raids on bank premises. The only way we can realise our aim is to assure all entrepreneurs in the state of their safety and protection of life and property. We shall not fall to do this”, he stated.

The governor reiterated that his administration has procured and ordered hardware that could be deployed for land and aerial surveillance, with a view to confronting and vanquishing the most sophisticated criminals and make their venture into the state unprofitable and very costly, saying that the aim of his government is to respond to any distress call in any part of the state within the shortest possible time.

Stating that his administration has worked in the past with the regular security arrangement, which, he noted has been responsible for the relative peace in the state, Aregbesola stressed that the intention was to take it to the next level and ensure total security for the people of the state.

Commending the existing security agencies in the state for their efforts at ensuring the peaceful atmosphere in the state, the governor said that his administration would not stop providing all logistics to ensure continuous protection of lives and properties.

The General-Officer, Second Mechanised Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Major-General Muhammed Abubakar, commended the state government for his efforts on the security of the state, charging the guard to put to the best use all the security logistics provided by the state government.

The Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Zone 11, Mr Orubebe, described security as a collective responsibility of all, therefore advocating combined efforts towards combating crimes.
